Elon Musk wants to build a new 10 mile loop to serve the Strip.

Elon Musk’s tunnel-building company wants to take Las Vegas a step further. In May 2020, The Boring Company completed the creation of its second tunnel in the American city. Still, Elon Musk isn't going to stop there. He wants to build a loop-shaped tunnel to serve downtown Las Vegas and McCarran International Airport.

A tunnel to serve the Strip in Las Vegas soon?

Already, at the end of summer 2020, The Boring Company obtained approval to build a new tunnel in Las Vegas. At the time, Elon Musk clarified that: “We are delighted to receive approval from the county commission to move forward with our proposed passenger station and tunnel and look forward to taking the next steps. to create an innovative transport solution for our guests and visitors to the Convention Center ”.

But The Boring Company isn't going to stop there. Elon Musk wants to build a real network under Las Vegas. He has just announced that he finally plans to build an extension of his underground transportation system below the city. The company now wants to build a 10-mile underground "loop" to serve Las Vegas' famous strip of casino hotels in the heart of downtown (the Strip), as well as McCarran International Airport.

Concretely, this new proposal from the Boring Company could make it possible to connect the Las Vegas Convention Center to Mandalay Bay in just three minutes, against 30 minutes on the surface during rush hour. The announcement comes just days after the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) bought the Las Vegas monorail. An acquisition that ends a non-compete agreement that had previously prevented The Boring Company from digging tunnels serving the same areas.

Each hotel will have to pay to have its station

In the near future, Elon Musk plans to move up to 4,000 passengers per hour through his tunnels aboard the Tesla Model 3 and Model X. The final project, of course, is to operate these vehicles completely autonomously. This will not be the case right away. Over the months, sensors will equip the tunnels to allow vehicles to gain in autonomy so that, in the long term, these tunnels become roads perfectly suited to autonomous cars.

If the new expansion proposed by Musk's company is approved, it will be funded differently this time around. The Boring Company will pay the cost of building the tunnel for this new urban loop. Casinos and hotels in the service area that want a resort will also have to pay to have them built. The Boring Company will present its project very soon to the Las Vegas City Council.
